Shift-R-Gate      INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

1.         Tools needed

                                    Medium Phillips Screw Driver #2

                                    Allen Wrench  3/32

                                    .201 number “7” Drill bit

                                    Hand Held Electric Drill

                                    Wrenches – 5/16 & 11/32 open end , box, or socket

                                    Small Needle Nose Pliers

                                    Continuity tester or test light

2.                  Be sure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake set or wheels chocked to prevent rolling. This is an important safety check – do not skip

3.                  Place the shifter arm in the Neutral position. Remove the shifter knob by loosening the Allen head set screw until the knob can be rotated easily. Count the number of rotations needed to remove the knob.  (This will make reinstallation easier)

4.                  Remove the two Phillips head screws that secure the console top plate to the console. The screws are located under the front of the console door.

5.                  Remove the console top by gently raising it and sliding it rearward. It may be necessary to move the shifter arm to make the removal easier. As the console top plate is raised unplug the light socket from the indictor area. Carefully place the top plate aside for reinstallation later.

6.                  Unplug the back up light switch if equipped. Using the needle nose pliers, remove the clip connecting the shifter arm to the linkage bar.

7.                  Remove the three 3/8 screws holding the shifter bracket to the car and remove the shifter. Note: there are two screws at the front and one at the rear.

8.                  Remove the retainer bar ( 1 - 5/16 screw) and the clip holding the shifter arm to the shifter assembly. ( note the location of any washers or spacers for reassembly) Remove the shifter arm. Remove the two screws holding the back-up light switch if equipped, and remove the switch

9.                  Using a .201 diameter drill ( number “7” ) drill out the rivets that secure the stock shifter gate and remove the OEM gate plate.  [ an alternate method  - the rivet may also be removed by grinding off the rivet heads on a bench grinder. ] Remove all of the old rivets. You should be left with two .200 diameter holes in the shifter-mounting bracket.

10.              Using the screws supplied, install the Shift-R-Gate in the same location as the original gate. Note the orientation of Shift-R-gate in the bracket in FIGURE #1. Tighten the screws and nuts securely. The nuts (11/32) must be on the outside of the bracket. Reinstall the backup light switch if equipped. Reinstall the shifter arm making sure the spring-loaded tab is in the gate. Install the washer, retaining clip, and retainer bar.

11.              Before installing in the vehicle check the motion of the shifter through the complete travel range pushing the knob pin as required. There should be no binding. The mounting holes provide some adjustment for the gate to be raised in the bracket if necessary. Set the backup light switch so it operates when the shifter is in the reverse location. [continuity tester or test light]

12.              Now reinstall the shifter in the vehicle and connect the linkage arm reusing the clip. Again check the motion of the shifter through all gears P-R-N-D-2-1 You should hear a positive click of the transmission selector in each position.

13.              Reinstall the console top plate and the shifter knob. Install the knob the same number of turns as it was removed or until the shifter can be operated through all gear positions. The knob controls the stroke of the spring-loaded tab. If full travel cannot be reached rotate the shifter knob counterclockwise one turn at a time until full travel is obtained and tighten the setscrew.

14.              Place the shifter in park and neutral. Disable the ignition by removing the coil wire and check that the starter turns in only the park and neutral positions. This is an important safety check – do not skip  Some vehicles may require adjustment of the linkage at the transmission.
